Quite a lot accomplished this week.  the weather was reasonable for the most part, though unreasonably warm for a few days, which was very nice to experience.  It took nearly two days of work by four of us, myself, Aerron, Maggie and Gabriel, to get all of our garlic planted.

Aerron harnessed the horses and used the single row cultivator to go over each bed to get the soil fluffed up and ready for garlic planting.  We had also brought up one last pickup truck load of compost to spread on the area prior to cultivating.  One pass was made with the cultivators set wide and a second pass with the tools set narrow.  The setting change is accomplished quickly by just moving a lever nicely located in front of the operator.  We broke apart the garlic heads so that the cloves could be individually planted at about 6 inches apart in the rows which were three to a bed.  We planted 15 different garlic varieties. The standard variety, Music, was the one most planted, about 950 feet of row or about 1900 cloves. If all were to go perfectly then we would harvest 1900 big heads of Garlic come late July of 2016.  But there will be somewhat fewer, though not too many fewer.  We’ll likely get at least 1700 good sized garlic heads of the Music but of course that is just a good guess.  The next most planted variety was Salt Spring Island at about 400 feet of row followed by Ukrainian at just over 300 feet of row.  We now need to first spread leaves over all the beds and the walking rows between the beds and then follow that with a good thick covering of hay or straw mulch.  Our Garlic responds well to this treatment.

The last CSA pick up day of the 2015 season went well on Tuesday late afternoon and evening.  We had a pretty reasonable supply of veggies consisting of Carrots, small Green Onions, very small but excellent quality Cauliflower, small Cabbages, small Celery, small but tasty Brussels Sprouts on short logs, a Salad mix of Lettuce, tender tiny Cabbage leaves, small Kale leaves and |Arugula, hot Peppers, a single medium sized Leek, small but plenty of Broccoli, lots of Kale, a bunch of Parsley, Swiss Chard, a few Parsnips and lots of Apples.  The weather was very nice, exactly opposite to that of the previous Tuesday.

We spent most of our Sunday working on an enclosure for the back of our pickup truck.  We had to buy some nuts and bolts and washers and some hinges but the wood was a scavenged pieces, even the plywood.  We even bought a new, but very cheap electric drill in order to drill through metal mostly.  Hand drills work good for the wood parts but it is much more difficult to drill through metal, though we do it with the hand drills.  The drills we have are very old and mostly worn out so it might be a good idea to buy a couple of new hand drills and a good selection of new bits and spend some time to sharpen any old ones that are otherwise ok.  We need to get it finished tomorrow sometime so it is ready for us to take some cows and sheep to the butchers.
